When You need to Delete a WordPress Theme
A WordPress Theme is something that all website owners will need to know about at some point in time. A lot of people think it’s an easy thing to know about and do, but many never bother. They think it’s something that they’ll never come across in their lifetime creating a website, but there are a number of reasons why you might want to delete them.
One reason is that they can simply be taking up space on your server, and there are more important files you need to be saving room for. Another reason is that if you have a limited amount of storage space, you might need to delete some of your themes in order to make room for new ones. And finally, if you’re having trouble with a theme, rather than trying to figure it out, you can always delete it and try a new one.
Things to Do Before You Delete a WordPress Theme
There are a few things you’ll want to do before deleting a WordPress Theme, and the first is to make sure that it’s not currently in use on any of your websites. To do this, you can go to Appearance>Themes in your WordPress Dashboard and check to see if it’s currently being used.
If it is, then you’ll want to deactivate it first. To do this, click on the theme you want to delete, and then click on the “Deactivate” button.
Now that it’s deactivated, you’re free to delete it. But before you do, it’s a good idea to backup your files. To do this, go to Tools>Export and then select “All Content.” This will export all of your files, including your theme files.
Once you’ve backed them up, you can then delete a WordPress Theme by going to Appearance>Themes and clicking on the “Delete” button. A popup will appear asking if you’re sure you want to delete it, and if you are, click “OK.”
How to Delete a WordPress Theme in cPanel
If you’re using cPanel, it’s a bit different than the process above. To delete them, you’ll need to go into File Manager and then click on “Public_html.” Once there, click on the “Themes” folder. It should only have the default theme in there at this point since you’ll be deleting all of your themes.
Then, highlight the folder and click on the “Delete” button at the top of your cPanel page. A popup will appear asking if you’re sure you want to delete it, and if you are, click “Yes.”
How to Delete a WordPress Theme in FTP
If you’re using FTP to manage your website, it’s a bit different than the process above. To delete them, you’ll need to go into your FTP client and then click on the “wp-content” folder. Once there, you’ll see a “Themes” folder.
Highlight the folder and click on the “Delete” button at the top of your FTP client. A popup will appear asking if you’re sure you want to delete it, and if you are, click “Yes.”
Testing Your Site After Deleting a Theme
Now that you’ve deleted your theme, it’s a good idea to go into your WordPress Dashboard and check to make sure everything is still working properly. Go to your Themes page, and you should have the default theme there now.
If you want to replace it with another theme, you can download the theme files and upload them to your server. To do this, go to Appearance>Themes and click on “Add New.” Then, click on “Upload Theme” and select the theme files. Once they’re uploaded, click “Install Now” and then “Activate” to set the theme.
That’s it! You’ve now deleted a WordPress theme and replaced it with another. As you can see, it’s a pretty easy process, and one that you can do to save storage space or if you’re having trouble with your current theme.
Deleting Theme-related Content
Widgets
If you delete a widget, its content will be removed from your sidebar. To delete a widget, go to Appearance>Widgets and then drag the widget you want to delete to the “Delete” area at the bottom of your sidebar.
Menus
If you delete a menu, its contents will be removed from your navigation. To delete a menu, go to Appearance>Menus and then click on the “Delete Menu” button.
Dummy Content
If you’re using the default WordPress theme, deleting it will also delete the dummy content. If you’re using a custom theme, you’ll need to manually delete the dummy content. To do this, go to your “Home” page and then click on the “X” in the top right corner of the content box.
Images
If you delete an image, its post will still remain on your blog with a broken link. To change this, click on the “Edit” link next to the post and delete it.
When Not to Delete a WordPress Theme
There may be times when you don’t want to delete your theme, such as when you’re in the process of designing a custom theme or when a new version of your theme comes out shortly after you delete it.
In this case, you’ll want to make sure that you’re backing up your theme files so you can restore them later if needed. You can do this by either copying the files to a separate location on your server or by using a plugin like BackupBuddy.
